#WHYTRID - Kaki Cobb
Hey y’all!! My name is Kaki Cobb and I am a rising sophomore from Charleston, SC.
Looking back on this season last year, I’m in awe of how I’ve grown throughout such a prominent transition in life mixed with possibly the craziest change in the world. I was excited for recruitment and to meet new people, but the experience itself was daunting—in a much different way.
Going into recruitment, I had doubts about myself since my older sister, Amelia, was a junior Tri Delta at the time. I knew her friends and absolutely adored them, but was scared that would be all Tri Delta saw: Amelia’s little sister. Before recruitment began (and even during it), my mom continuously reminded me to “make my own decisions,” which honestly just left me more confused.
Flash forward to Round 3, Sisterhood. I had high expectations for what Tri Delta would bring. I was already infatuated by videos and the short conversations I had, one even with my future big. However, what I did not—and could not—foresee was the love I received from then-senior and now Beta Theta alum, Stewart Buxton. Our long conversation simplified down to a feeling of being wanted and loved all through a computer screen. The words, “Kaki I had to fight to talk to you,” followed by the validation from a senior completely took me over. Stewart managed to control my unspoken fears through her personal experiences, relating to each and every one of my emotions.
After Sisterhood round, a sudden feeling hit me—Tri Delta wanted me. Not the “me” who was Amelia’s sister, but the “me” who related to Mabel, Foster, Stewart, and all of the Tri Deltas I spoke to, saw in videos, and had already met. At this moment, I felt a sense of being and purpose within the chapter, a feeling I was longing for in the recruitment process and hope everyone has the chance to experience. Clemson Tri Delta validated my worth and showed me how to “Bring You,” which I will forever be grateful for. I LOVE YOU, BETA THETA!!!
